Golden Agri-Resources’ (GAR) is a vertically-integrated palm oil plantation company with a commitment to responsible palm oil. In Indonesia, our primary activities include cultivating and harvesting oil palm trees; extracting fresh fruit bunches (FFB) into crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel; to processing it into value-added products such as cooking oil, margarine, shortening, biodiesel and oleochemicals; as well as merchandising palm products throughout the world. GAR has a broad presence in international destination markets with on-shore refining in China and India, and sales representative offices and ex-tank operations in many large consuming countries.
Our integrated palm oil business activities start from oil palm seeds right to your local supermarket shelves.
Seedlings: Good quality seeds are crucial for the long-term productivity of our plantations. One of our subsidiaries, Dami Mas, produces high yielding seeds originating from Papua New Guinea to support our yield intensification plan. To sustain long-term growth, our SMART Biotechnology Centre is also able to produce exceptionally high-yielding oil palm planting materials – Eka 1 and Eka 2 – developed through an advanced biotechnology programme.
Plantations: We cultivate oil palm plantations in Indonesia with a total area of 535,923 hectares (including plasma) with an annual FFB yield of 20.4 tonnes per hectare in 2020. Our nucleus plantations comprise 79 percent of total hectarage.
Extraction: Our mills extract CPO and palm kernel from the FFB with a combined capacity of approximately 14.0 million tonnes per annum.
Refining: CPO is processed in our own refineries in Indonesia which have a total capacity of almost 5 million tonnes per annum producing higher value-added refined products. Additionally, part of our refined products is further processed in our biodiesel facilities in Indonesia with a total capacity of 600,000 tonnes per annum. We also operate refineries in other large consuming countries, i.e. China and India with annual capacity of 175,000 tonnes and 750,000 tonnes, respectively.
Kernel Crushing: Our kernel crushing plants have a combined capacity of around 1.8 million tonnes per annum, processing palm kernel to produce higher-value palm kernel oil and palm kernel meal.
Marketing: As a “One-Stop Supplier”, we distribute and market our products to both local and export markets. We produce two of Indonesia’s leading brands of cooking oil – Filma and Kunci Mas.
Logistics and Distribution: Our capabilities in this area play an important role in our strategy to increase our footprint in global destination markets. We operate the largest palm oil-based shipping charter through a partnership, with broad global coverage including the Middle East and India. Our logistics capabilities are bolstered by our ownership of vessels, seaports, jetties, warehouses and bulking facilities in strategic locations. We have brought our products to more than 70 countries, with on-shore refining in China and India, and sales representative offices and ex-tank operations in many large consuming countries.
Leading-edge proprietary technology systems: Our proprietary management information system harnesses technology that puts us at the forefront of precision agriculture. GAR is now fully equipped with a state-of-the-art system that serves as a one-stop multi-function monitoring and management system for our entire plantation and downstream operations. We believe that fostering innovation and technology is important to enhance our competitive edge throughout the business value chain.
Industry-leading Research and Development: Located in Riau, SMART Research Institute (SMARTRI) is our flagship research centre with comprehensive programmes based on science and innovation. It focuses on sustainable solutions in improving practices in agronomy, breeding, and crop protection. The institute collaborates with both national and international research houses and academic institutions including the renowned Centre de Cooperation Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Developpement in France.
We have also invested in a state-of-the-art R&D centre adjacent to our refinery near Jakarta, to support the development of safe, healthy and delicious palm-based food products, as well as to innovate and broaden the palm-based products we produce. The centre is stocked with the latest in food technology laboratory equipment and is also equipped with a full concept kitchen that allows our chefs to test product applications on different types of food, as well as a pilot plant where our new products are going through process simulation.
