Golden-Agri Resources is aware and deeply regrets the incident involving members of the Orang Rimba people and a security guard of our subsidiary Primatama Kreasimas (PKM), within the company’s plantation area at Sarolangun Regency, Jambi Province.

From the information received, GAR can confirm reports of an altercation between a security guard and members of the Orang Rimba during which a weapon was brandished at company personnel. As a result of the incident, the Orang Rimba was taken directly by the company to the clinic and then to hospital for treatment. Hospital staff have confirmed that there is no major injury.

The company does not tolerate any form of violence in its operations, regardless of the cause. This incident is clearly a breach of company policy, immediate steps are being taken by our subsidiary to ensure a similar situation does not happen again and the staff member will be disciplined appropriately.

On October 1, representatives from PKM met key stakeholders including local community leaders and the police to resolve the issue amicably and in accordance with local customary laws.

GAR believes in bringing positive impacts and benefits to the local communities where ever the company operates, this also applies to warga orang rimba. At the moment, GAR has been engaged in a peaceful relationship with a community of warga orang rimba that lives in the village of Gurun Tuo nearby one of our subsidiary concession. This community consists of 34 households, whose children attend the company-funded primary school while a number of the adults work for our company. These adults enjoy a steady income and receive benefits such as healthcare from company’s clinic. The community aspires to acquire a national identification card for each member and to build water and electricity infrastructure in their village. We are currently exploring options on how it can best support this community. The company is looking into this type of model of partnership and how it can also be replicated in other areas.¹
